The Howe Island Fire Department was established in 1977 to the credit of a few eager individuals who identified the need for fire protection for the Island residents. After experiencing and feeling somewhat helpless watching people's personal possessions “go up in smoke”, the determination of these pioneer firefighters grew. They committed endless amounts of time in order to get organized and make the department operational. It has been an up hill battle to obtain proper equipment and to maintain it in good working condition. But these volunteers have persisted through the years and have formed a solid foundation for the Howe Island Fire Department.
To achieve our goals, there have been numerous fund raising events and the residents of Howe Island have generously contributed and supported the cause.Through the past twenty five years, the fire department has grown to the point of being self sufficient. It is able to adapt to the needs and demands of this growing community.
Presently, the Howe Island Fire Department is located on the "North Shore" and is operating out of what once used to be one of the three one roomed" school houses on the Island. With the addition of two fire vehicle bays, all the fire department's equipment is located in this dwelling. The Howe Island Firefighters Association also renovated the original school house to make a comfortable training room.Regular weekly training sessions occur so that all members are trained to a professional standard, and so the service provided to the community is of high quality. The Howe Island Fire Department is also a recognized "Certified" Emergency Response Team under the authority of the Ontario Ministry of Health. This team is able to provide rapid response and offer medical assistance to those who require such treatment.
